----------------------------------- NEWS Sidux have completely changed their logo to such a degree that all of my sidux art (along with everything previously done by others) is now irrelevant and totally obsolete. This was a decision made in secret without any discussion with the community that it affected. Rather than let all my work go to waste I have decided to convert my sidux art to Debian. This will be found in the Debian section of my site. I will no longer be creating any sidux art nor will I be using this distro, recommending it or having any involvement with it whatsoever. It is hard to escape the irony of sidux now using a poisonous bug as their mascot. ----------------------------------- |
Sidux is a GNU/Linux distribution based on the "unstable" branch of Debian called "Sid", hence the name Sidux. The aim is to make Sid a usable system that provides users with the most up to date software available. It is however debian/unstable so I do not recomend that you use this distro for anything important but rather as a convenient way to play with the debian/sid. It comes only with free software and if you want to install non-free software you will need to add the sources for those repos yourself. Because it is based in Germany it only comes with the most basic of multimedia utilities and codecs and no instructions on how to install the other things you will almost certainly need.. To play dvds, watch all your videos and play all your music you will need to hunt these things down or go into their irc for instructions. Do not ask on their forum or your post will be instantly deleted or censored and you risk being banned. It is possible to run sidux more safely by using smxi from techpatterns.com to do your regular upgrades. However, the sidux devs have decided not to support this marvelous application so if you do use it you can't expect any support from them. They have become quite dogmatic about it which is a great shame; in fact mentioning smxi in their IRC channel is a recipe for prompt and ruthless banning. You can however get support directly from techpatterns.com or via the #smxi IRC channel at OFTC if you do choose to use it. This is a distro that claims to be community based but in reality is run by a group of core devs that decide everything in private dev channels with practically no community consultation. It is therefore created and structured around the desires of the devs and not the community itself. This is not a distro for anybody but the most hardened debian geek that knows how to fix things when they break.
